Dear Lewises,
I feel compelled to write something to conclude this chapter while our building and Berlin is still ablaze with the creative energy from our time in Woltersdorf. Thank you for an escape from a world where rules and walls create our past and present. I was allowed to play with what I put forth as my own identity, and the house paved a way to reinventing our external world from the safety of a bizarre, timeless perspective.
Thank you for creating a big playground, where I could be a prince or a sea monster or a recluse whenever I wanted to be. It was fun.

Love for ages,

Michael

On Becoming _ _ R _ _

In this film I have been asked to play the character of Sarah a member of LEWIS FOREVER. Here is the beginning of a diary about that process.

American Independence Day, 2011

We played the same scene over and over again today. The task was to dress the set, dress ourselves and then memorize these lines that we were going to deliver in a voice other than our own during a tea party.  Sarah had three lines, two of which influenced her character choice. They were the following

S: There seems to be in contemporary thought romantic notions of negotiations.
S: Sometimes, all inclusive democracy should be avoided at all costs.

Sarah was given these lines out of context yet she assumed the character of an old conservative politician whose voice was reminiscent of Richard Nixon. What information did she perceive in these three lines that influenced her to go in that direction?

Sarah was critical of these lines, which were the basis of the character she played throughout the day. Sarah is still holding onto the belief (or the “romantic notion”) that democratic negotiations can exist with a productive and even successful result, even though Sarah has never really experienced this situation. She was very aware of the process of collaboration needed to make the scene for the day, but she could not figure out why it always seems that within a collaborative process, for her, there is this awful feeling of comparison; who contributed the best idea, who executed the task most creatively. Why weren’t certain suggestions taken into consideration, why does it never seem equal. Why have compromises lead to half or unfulfilled visions?

She couldn’t understand why she couldn’t take her ego out of the equation.

Yet the scene did come together and interesting moments of play and interaction did occur. Maybe the romantic notion lies in the expectation that all members are contributing at the same capacity at all times to some sort of magical uni vision.

Sarah remembered  something that President Obama said in a speech when he was in Berlin, before he was elected president. He was talking about the American people as a people of improbable hope. Even though Sarah doesn’t often think about herself as an American she still believes herself to be one of those people. However improbable of hope she will continuously attempt to engage in negotiations that could possibly lead to more successful collaborations and all inclusive democracy.
